Support Group

Who makes up the group and what is its function?

Although diagnosis and treatment may vary widely, those affected by cancer have many shared experiences. In common with other support groups, we have found that meeting together on an informal basis allows us to share our ideas, feelings and fears with people who really understand and empathise. Through contact with one another we are able to discuss ways of dealing with issues such as stress, tiredness, family problems and the side effects of treatment.
An additional function of the Group is to provide support to personnel serving in Cyprus who have relatives suffering from cancer and living in the UK or elsewhere.

Does everyone receiving help from Open Arms have to join the support group?

No they don’t. There are cancer survivors who feel that they have no need of a support group. However, it may well be that they have a lot to offer those more recently diagnosed in terms of experience and hope for the future and for that reason we do like to encourage them to contact the group.

Is the group open to everyone?

As a Service charity, we are unable to offer non-entitled people medical treatment or financial assistance. However, our self-help support group has no such boundaries and offers emotional support and practical advice to any cancer patient.

Where and when does the group meet?

We meet informally on a regular basis, either over coffee or the occasional meal out with partners and guests. Our meetings are usually light-hearted affairs and offer a chance to exchange news of the latest treatments, dietary tips and how to order special items of clothing not always available in Cyprus.

We welcome anyone who is going through or has been treated for cancer or who is supporting a family member living in Cyprus or the UK
